Watching fights in the 1980s with my maternal Grandfather was such a treat. I only started realizing his impact on my love for the sport recently. But had no clue that my influence went farther than I ever knew. Stories from my Father’s side were unknown to me until my Daddy started talking one-day last year about watch parties my paternal Grandfather had way back in the ’50s and ’60s. My Dad remembers being a kid and watching everyone pull up outside their house to “listen” to a fight and watching fights once they bought a television. After my Dad reminisced about my Grandfather’s early boxing parties (which I love to plan and enjoy boxing parties now); it is definitely in my genes stronger than I realized. It is apart of my boxing heritage.
Firstly, boxing is a full-body exercise! Muscles all over your body from your abs, back, glutes, shoulders, biceps, deltoids, triceps, quads, hamstrings, you name it, are engaged in every movement. You dodge and throw punches, throw in kicks and knee strikes, and dance around the ring to evade your opponent. In a typical session you start off slow to cover the basics and as you go on you build up the combinations and drills making them more complex which keeps your heart rate high. Every move is high in intensity and whether you are boxing for fitness sake or to fight you are bound to sweat. In a hour session of boxing it is estimated that people burn over 500 calories! All That Confidence: In individual sports like boxing, you build a strong relationship between yourself and your body and you know your strengths and weaknesses extremely well. In the ring and in life you may be placed in difficult positions and you have two options, you can either have faith in your abilities or fear failure. Being able to carry on in the face of adversity requires a certain degree of confidence. Obviously everyone wants to win, at least that is the main objective, but also the point is also to focus on doing your best, a poor attitude in the ring or in life can set you up to lose before the first punch is even thrown. Stress Relief: We have heard it a thousand time, exercise reduces stress and blah blah blah. But with boxing it does more than just that. The thing I love about boxing is that it requires 100% of my focus, I never feel my mind wandering to what I am doing later that day or to the pile of work I have waiting for me at home. With boxing you need to be present or you will get punched, playfully of course. Mental Strength: What I think is super cool about boxing is the link with the basic primal instincts “fight or flight”. It is the most basic and human interaction between people and it has been around forever. I have never been a violent person and I would still not describe myself as violent, but I know that before I started boxing the idea of being punched or kicked scared me. However, when you box you are forced to go against your basic instincts and face the punch straight on. IT’S FUN! Everyone I have ever met and talked to after a session has told me how much fun they had! The sport never becomes boring or monotonous because there are so many skills, combinations, and techniques to master. Once the session ends people want to know more about the sport and want to grow as athletes, they are inspired to watch videos, shadowbox in their living rooms, and fantasize about the next time they get to put on the gloves and punch…or maybe that is just me

Hitting a punching bag releases endorphins in the brain, which can help decrease stress. Stress is the body's natural response to danger. However, stress is an emotion meant to be felt in emergencies and serious circumstances — not something that occurs on a daily basis. However, daily stress has become commonplace for many Americans. A stress punching bag can help. Because chronic stress leads to inflammation, depression and affects your sleep, its important to take steps to relieve your stress. Exercise's effects on the body help to relieve stress — and hitting a punching bag can have a cathartic effect on your stress level Hitting a punching bag releases endorphins in the brain, which can help decrease stress. Stress Punching Bag Hitting a stress punching bag can be a physical and symbolic expression of intense emotions. Physically, hitting a punching bag produces a response in your body that helps to relieve tension. Symbolically, you may picture the punching bag or punching pillow as representative of your stress. Imagining a troublesome situation or person in your life and punching at the bag allows you to express anger in a healthier way than becoming physical with another person. However, it is a good idea to combine a physical expression of your anger with mental expressions, including writing your thoughts on paper or talking through your frustrations with a medical professional. This combination of physical and mental stress relief can help you relieve stress for good. Punch with Caution When using a punching bag to release anger or reduce stress, it's important to protect vulnerable areas, including your wrists and hands, before hitting. Wearing protective gloves, wrist wraps or tape can help prevent injury. Warm up with jumping jacks or jogging in place before punching. Aim for the middle of a punching bag, which tends to be softer than the upper or lower portions. Work your way up to hitting the bag for three minutes. Be sure to rest for a few minutes between rounds to avoid muscle strain. When you feel enough stress has left your body, drink water and take a few deep breaths to further ease tension. If you don't have a punching bag handy, you also can shadowbox, which is punching without actually hitting a target. Stay conservative with your shadow boxing punches to avoid hyper-extending your arm at the elbow. When hitting the stress punching bag, your brain increases production of endorphins, neurotransmitters that create feel-good thoughts in your brain. Punching helps to relieve muscle tension that can collect when you experience stress. As you continue to punch, you will find your focus is improved, increasing your concentration and helping you forget the reasons why you are stressed. While punching a bag to release anger can temporarily relieve stress, it may not be a permanent solution for chronic anger or stress. Consider talking with a counselor if you experience these emotions frequently.
